After installing Vista, it seems that my hard drive
just continually thrashes trying to index all of the
files on my drive. Since I do not use the search
feature to locate files, is it possible to stop the
indexing service?
Sure, you can stop it from running, but typically,
the indexing service runs pretty constant during the
first few days after installation of Vista. Then, it
will calm down and run silently in the background.
If you are getting a lot of hard drive thrashing
continuing after the few days I mentioned, then it
could be something else that is casing the trouble.
However, if you want to turn off the indexing
service, here's how:
-
Click the Windows button.
-
Type "services" in the search field.
-
Right click the Search service and select
Properties from the resulting menu.
-
Select "Disabled" from the drop down menu next
to "Startup type".
-
Next, right click the Indexing Service and
select "Stop".
